The following appeared in the May 26, 1999 Times Colonist:
CLOAK --- Randal A., passed through
this world, on to the next, peacefully and with dignity, his loving wife, Terrie (nee
Dalziel) at his side, on Sunday, May 23, 1999 at 5:25 p.m. Family members left to
celebrate Randal's life are Randal's mother, Margaret and father, Gordon; sisters, Regi
Mather and Ronnie Saretski (husband Terry); nieces, Mary, Kathleen, Seanna and nephew,
Frank of Saskatoon; Randal's daughters, Jessie of Calgary and Tanya and Danielle White of
Victoria; mother-in-law, Pat and father-in-law, Bill; brother-in-law, David of Victoria;
sister-in-law, Cindy Hull (husband Murray) and her children, Christina, Michael, David and
Brett of Sidney.
Randal was born in Moose jaw, Saskatchewant on September 2, 1949.
His talent for poetry and music and his desire for truth and knowledge, became
evident in his early years. With his J-45 Gibson guitar in hand he toured the U.S.
in the late 60's playing bistro's, hooking up with various bands and experienced life on
the road. In the late 70's and early 80's Randal received an Honors degree in Fine
Arts and a diploma in Television. By then he was a published poet, an accomplished
song writer and was developing an interest in theatre. Randal received his B.Ed. in
Calgary and moved to Victoria in 1986 to begin his teaching career. Along with
tutoring at UVic and substituting in District #61, Randal's leadership qualities and
empathy for teenagers let to his co-founding the Alliance Club for street kids, at a time
when there was no safe place for teenagers to just 'hang out.'
In the spring of 1989 Randal began teaching at Mount Douglas High School. When Spectrum Community School
opened its theatre in 1996, Randal began teaching there as well. At both schools he
developed an excellent rapport with students and staff. He was able to get the best
from each person he encountered and this was reflected in the high quality theatre
productions he directed. He was a motivator of high self-esteem and gave everyone
the respect they deserved. Randal loved teaching, jamming with musicians, his dog
Roady, riding his motorcycle, hiking in the Rockies and going to beaches to just 'hang
out.' Randal Will be missed by all who know him.
